Akhtar Mengal resigns from the National Assembly

Akhtar Mengal, elected as an MNA from Khuzdar (NA-256) in the February 8 general elections, recently announced his resignation, which is still pending acceptance. He made this decision amid escalating security tensions in Balochistan, following deadly attacks and growing protests over enforced disappearances.

Letter to NA Speaker

In a letter to NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Akhtar Mengal cited the “prevailing situation in Balochistan” as the reason for his resignation. He emphasized that the Assembly has long marginalized and ignored the province, leaving representatives like him powerless to make meaningful changes. Mengal criticized the lack of genuine representation for Balochistan, noting that whenever someone raises concerns, they face hostility, often being labeled traitors or worse.

Resignation and Reflection

Mengal expressed that under such conditions, his presence in the Assembly no longer served the interests of his constituents. He requested the NA Speaker to accept his resignation, hoping for Balochistan’s protection and prosperity.

Speaking to the press outside Parliament, Mengal acknowledged that his resignation might upset voters. However, he apologized, stressing that the real issue lies with politicians who have turned politics into a business. He even remarked that running a pakora shop would be better than engaging in such politics.

Tribute to His Father

Mengal shared on X that his resignation was a tribute to his father, Sardar Attaullah Mengal, BNP’s founder, on the third anniversary of his death. He reiterated that the deteriorating situation in Balochistan had left him no choice but to step down, as remaining in Parliament had not benefitted his people.

Political Activities

Earlier this year, Mengal abstained from voting in the prime ministerial election but supported PTI-backed Mahmood Khan Achakzai in the presidential polls in March. In April, he led a meeting of six opposition parties, launching the movement Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP).
